Athletics

At Show Low High School, we believe that participation in athletics activities widens the educational experience and makes school more enjoyable. In addition to strengthening physical skills, students learn valuable life skills including how to work on a team, ideals of fairness and sportsmanship, self- discipline and responsibility, and respect for authority and teammates.

Eligibility

Beginning in the 2023-24 SY, Show Low High School will implement a 3-week grading period cycle school-wide to support a stronger academic culture of accountability to meeting deadlines. All coursework including practice, formative assessments, and summative assessments will continue as normal in each class, with grades being assigned to only those assessments that demonstrate student mastery of the standards (Standards Based Grading).

The only change is that now every 3 weeks a new “Reporting Period” (RP) will open, the previous RP will remain “Active”, and the RP before the Active Period will “Close”. Once a Reporting Period has “closed”, grades within that period may no longer be retaken for an improved score and all “incomplete” grades will be assigned a score of zero (0). This provides students with at least 3 weeks and at most 6 weeks to complete or improve their grades, and it gives more frequent deadlines to increase urgency and motivation

Example: Students will have Mastery Friday each week as always and then on Friday, September 15th, students will have a final “Power Friday” opportunity to improve or submit any assessments from RP1 before everything from RP1 closes. Similarly, after October 5th everything from RP2 will close, so on and so forth.

Additional Notes:

  • Extra-curricular Eligibility will run on a 3-week schedule following the Reporting Periods. Eligibility will post on the first day of the new RP and students may become eligible the day following when their teacher confirms that their grade was brought up to passing.

  • If a RP ends on a no-school Friday, time will be spent in class on the Thursday before for reteach/reassessment.

All grading closes and officially reports to transcripts at the end of each semester.

  • Transfer students enrolling at SLHS and wishing to participate in extra-curricular activities will be held accountable to all eligibility rules based on the grades they transfer in with (whether they enroll during the school year or at the end of a grading period).

  • If a student drops a class after the drop deadline without administrator approval and receives an ‘F’ on their transcript, he/she will be ineligible for the remainder of that semester and will follow the ineligibility rules following a semester ‘F’ as well.

  • An ineligible student may practice but they may not participate in games or travel with the team.

  • Policies pulled from SLUSD policy manual: J 4561 (JJJ-RA).
